Welcome to Seventh Grade Literature!
STATE GOALS
#1 Read with understanding and fluency
#2 Read and understand literature representative
of various societies, eras, and ideas.
GOAL
The main goal of the 7th grade literature department is to help the student realize that reading is FUN and to encourage them to read as much as they can. Students should vary reading experiences with the literary heritage of classics mixed with contemporary writings, poems, plays, and other types of literature. The students should begin to critically evaluate what they read and should begin to expand their reading interests.
COURSE EXPECTATIONS
Students will be expected to
° Complete all assignments on time
° Complete all projects on time
° Read TWO children’s award-winning books EACH 9 weeks
° Use the “Pillar of Success” program promoted at Logan
BOOK REPORTS
Students may report on the required 2 books EACH 9 weeks in a variety of the following ways:
° Accelerated reader computer tests (passing grade of 7/10)
° Special projects
Each book used for a book report must be at least 100 pages long, be a book the student has NEVER read before, and be recognized as an outstanding book for one of the following reasons:
° It is a classic
° It is written by a Newbery Award-winning author
° It is written by a Rebecca Caudill Award-winning author
° It is an outstanding book of the 20th century
*These books are marked in the LMC with a green dot.
COURSE MATERIALS
° Textbook
° One 3 ring binder
° Straight – edged loose leaf paper
° Pencils, blue/black pen, red pen
° Colored pencils or markers
° Library book (from LMC)
° Various materials as needed for special projects
GRADES
The student’s quarterly grade will be based on points earned from homework, quizzes, exams, projects, and book reports. Points will be based upon the importance of each assessment. The student’s total points will be divided by the total number of possible points to determine the student’s percentage. A letter grade will be assigned using Logan’s school grading scale.

14 – Always
13 – Usually
12 – Sometimes
11 – Frequent problems & disruptions
10 – Almost daily problems that disrupt class and affect the
educational classroom atmosphere
Based on punctual, courteous, helpful, honest, reliable, positive attitude, follows school rules, participates, may go “above and beyond” expectations.
